Camping with your Dog in the Day
A Few Things to Remember:
- Make sure your dog has enough shade in its area to stay cool.
- Keep an eye out for heat exhaustion and heat stroke in your dog. They need to have an area of shade and have plenty of water to stay cool. Make a note of how weather conditions affect your dog (i.e. the heat, cold, rain and wind, etc.). Here is more detailed information on Heat Exhaustion/Stroke.
- Your dog should be supervised at all times and should either be on a leash, long lead or within a fenced area. You can buy portable fences made for dogs which are easy to set up anywhere. This will keep your dog in a designated area without being tied up. These fences are stable, but be sure you keep an eye on him, though, as they are not foolproof.
- Ensure you supervise your dog closely when around children, visitors and other dogs.
- Do your best to keep your dog as quiet as possible. Continued barking disturbs your fellow campers and wildlife in the area. Camping dogs are given a bad reputation when owners do not take responsibility for their dogs and they can become a nuisance to others.
- It is a good idea to allow some time for your dog to exercise/play and be active. Take your dog on walks and get him involved in your camping activities. Try not to have him tied up all day and night as that’s not making the most of his camping experience.
- Always pick up after your dog, especially its toilet business, whether in the campsite on hiking trails or anywhere else. Dispose all poop bags in the designated bins provided.
